Botox: an Option for a More Youthful Appearance

I’ve spent many years of my professional life not only maintaining and restoring patients’ oral health, but also giving them smiles that boost their self-image and confidence. Some of my patients started asking if I could also enhance their appearance in other ways. I was also motivated to acquire additional skills in cosmetic procedures because some, such as Botox injections, are also helpful in certain dental situations. For example, Botox can be very useful in some patients with chronic TMJ (jaw pain), denture issues, or those in need of lip augmentation. So, to provide additional services to my patients, I decided to leverage my existing in-depth knowledge of facial structure and musculature, while also pursuing additional training in specific cosmetic procedures. Botox is one of the areas of expertise I’ve developed over the past few years.

How does Botox help improve appearance?

Botox is one of the most popular and affordable cosmetic procedures available. If you’re looking for a minimally invasive, low-cost cosmetic treatment to achieve a more youthful appearance, this may be a good option for you. The most common use of Botox is to reduce facial wrinkles. Botox is short for botulinum toxin. When this substance is injected into specific muscle areas, it relaxes those muscles. This, in turn, reduces wrinkles. Over 3 to 10 days, the skin in the targeted area starts to look smooth and largely wrinkle-free.

What “problem areas” are typically addressed with Botox injections?

The most common areas addressed by Botox are forehead lines, the “frown lines” in between the eyebrows, crow’s feet around the eyes, and the fine lines around the lips.

How long do the effects of Botox last?

The effects of Botox typically last about 3 to 5 months.

How long does a Botox procedure take?

The appointment time depends entirely on how many areas you’d like to address. For example, if you’d just like to reduce the frown lines between your eyebrows, your appointment will typically only take about 10 minutes.

Is Botox painful?

You will experience a little bit of pain with the injections, but most patients describe the pain as minimal and very tolerable. It lasts for just the couple of seconds it takes to perform each injection.

What should I do after Botox injections?

You should avoid massaging or rubbing the area and avoid lying face-down, such as on a massage table.
